Vacuum Cleaner Preventative Maintenance
Vacuums are extremely volatile machines. It’s true—there are lots of factors working against you in your fight to keep your vacuum cleaner standing upright and working functionally. Anything and everything from clogged hoses and frayed cables to snapped belts and punctured bags will try and stop you, so you’ll need to remain vigilant to obvious signs of wear and tear! Fortunately, there are some steps you can take regarding preventative maintenance that will keep your vacuum up and running. Here are just a few of them:
Filters/Collection Bags:
- Check for blockages often.
- Empty, inspect, and clean no less than monthly
- Regularly and properly clean to prevent dust
from circulating back out into the cleaning area.
- This also prevents blockages!
- There are several types of filters, but the main
ones are washable filters and HEPA filters.
- Washable filters reduce maintenance costs.
- HEPA filters retain higher levels of particulate and dust and should be changed at least twice per year.
- Many vacuums have indicator lights that light up when collection bags or filters need attention.
Belts:
- Today’s vacuum belts no longer require periodic replacement, as they are designed to offer much longer product lifecycles than in the past.
- However, it is always a good idea to have a spare vacuum belt on-hand for quick replacement in case of a break or fray.
General Maintenance:
- Inspect your vacuum monthly with special attention to wear and damage to belts, filters, cords, wheels, collection bags, hoses, and rollers.
- Consider a preventative maintenance program, suited to the frequency, duration, and type of cleaning you need from your vacuum.
While this is by no means a comprehensive list, this is a great start to ensure your vacuum works when you need it to—and for as long as you need it to.
